Split Sheets

Split sheets are the backbone of clean music business documentation. They tell publishers, Performing Rights Organizations (PROs) like BMI and ASCAP, and music platforms exactly who wrote what and who owns what share. Without accurate split sheets, you risk registration errors, missing royalties, or disputes down the road.

Producer Dashboard makes exporting split sheets straightforward. You select your tracks, choose a format, and download a file ready to send to your publisher, PRO, or music platform.

The Export widget lives in the Activity Panel on the right side of your screen. When you have tracks selected in the grid, this widget wakes up and shows you your export options.

Important context: Only highlighted (selected) tracks get exported. Selecting a bucket in the sidebar doesn’t automatically include those tracks in your export — you need to click on the tracks themselves in the main grid to highlight them.

When tracks are selected, the widget displays:

  • The number of tracks ready to export
  • A format dropdown to choose your template
  • A file type dropdown to pick your output format
  • A warning section if any required data is missing
  • The export button

If nothing is selected, the widget shows a friendly prompt explaining how to select tracks.

Different recipients expect different formats. Producer Dashboard gives you four main templates to choose from.

The Kobalt format creates one row per composer per song with 19 columns matching their exact template. This is ideal if you’re working with Kobalt Music Group or a publisher that uses Kobalt’s systems.

Each row includes the composer name, IPI number, society affiliation, share percentage, publisher details, and whether the publisher is controlled. If a song has three writers, you’ll get three separate rows for that song.

Musicbed uses a consolidated format where each song takes one row, with multiple owners joined by ” / ” separators. The template splits into two sections: track data on the left (BPM, key, lyrical themes) and owner contact details on the right.

This format is useful when you need to submit a clean overview to Musicbed or a similar platform that wants consolidated song data with owner breakdowns.

The generic format is your everyday workhorse. It creates a row for each collaborator on each song, including all the key fields: song title, ISWC, ISRC, duration, language, writer role, master split, publishing split, and publisher details.

This format works well for internal records, distributor submissions, or sending to any partner who doesn’t require a specific template.

The PRO Registration format exports as a multi-tab Excel workbook. This is the most comprehensive option and includes:

  • Works tab — Summary row per song with alternative titles, ISWC, ISRC, duration, language, instrumental status, and counts of writers and publishers
  • Writers tab — One row per writer per song with name, role, IPI, society, and share
  • Publishers tab — One row per publisher per song with name, IPI, society, and share
  • Full Data tab — A denormalized flat table with every field for easy filtering and searching

This format is designed for direct PRO submissions or for handing off to a royalty administrator who needs complete information in a structured spreadsheet.

Once you’ve chosen a format, pick the file type that matches your needs.

File TypeBest For
CSVUniversal compatibility. Opens in Excel, Google Sheets, Numbers, and most music industry tools
Excel (.xlsx)Preserves formatting, multiple tabs, and is the standard for publisher submissions
PDFRead-only sharing. Great for sending finalized splits to collaborators for signatures
CWRComplex PRO registration files. Only available when a CWR service is connected in Settings

Before you export, the widget scans your selected tracks and warns you about missing information that PROs and publishers typically require.

Common warnings include:

  • Missing ISRC — The unique identifier for the recording
  • Missing ISWC — The unique identifier for the musical work
  • Missing artist name — The performing artist
  • Missing duration — Track length in minutes and seconds

These warnings don’t block your export — you can still download the file. But missing data may cause rejections when you submit to PROs or platforms. If you see warnings, click Fill Details to open the musical attributes editor and add the missing information before exporting.

When you export split sheets, each writer’s role appears as a code. Understanding these codes helps you fill in your collaborator profiles correctly.

CodeRoleWhen to Use
CComposerWrote the music only (no lyrics)
AAuthor/LyricistWrote the lyrics only
CAComposer and AuthorWrote both music and lyrics
ARArrangerCreated an arrangement of an existing work

For example, if you wrote a song’s melody and lyrics yourself, your role would be CA. If you co-wrote with someone who only contributed lyrics, they’d be A.

  • Always verify writer shares add up to 100% — PROs require the writer side to total exactly 100%. If you’re working with fractional ownership, make sure all percentages align before exporting.

  • Check publisher controlled status — The “Controlled” field indicates whether a publisher owns or controls that writer’s shares. Controlled publishers are typically your own publishing entity or one where you hold the rights.

  • Export early and often — Don’t wait until release day to generate split sheets. Export as soon as collaborators are confirmed to keep your documentation current.

  • Use the PRO Registration format for administrators — If you’re working with a royalty manager or PRO registration service, the multi-tab Excel format gives them everything they need in one organized file.

  • Track Metadata — Learn about the fields that appear on your split sheets and how to keep them accurate
  • Writer Roles & IPI — Understand IPI numbers, PRO affiliations, and how writer roles affect royalty splits
