Default Project Collaborators

When you work with the same bandmates, co-producers, or writers on multiple tracks, managing collaborators and split allocations consistently is important. This page explains how collaborator splits are calculated and how to keep your allocations balanced.

To manage default collaborators for a project:

  1. Open the Projects view and select your project
  2. Click the Collaborators button in the project header
  3. A panel opens showing all current default collaborators

You can also access collaborator settings from the Overview Widget when you have tracks selected. Look for the collaborator avatars and click the Manage Collaborators link to open the same panel.

In the Collaborators panel, click Add Collaborator. A form appears where you can:

  • Search for a user by name or email address
  • Configure their splits for master, publishing, and writer rights

The split fields accept percentages between 0 and 100. These percentages represent how ownership or publishing rights are divided among collaborators.

Every collaborator on a track has three types of splits:

  • Master Split — ownership of the recorded audio and master rights
  • Publishing Split — ownership of the songwriting and publishing rights
  • Writer Split — attribution specifically for songwriting contributions

These can be the same or different. For example, a producer might own 50% of the master but 0% of publishing or writer splits if they didn’t write any of the lyrics or melody.

The Collaborators panel displays the total allocation for both split types. You’ll see a running total that updates as you add or adjust collaborators:

  • Green text with a checkmark — total is at or below 100%
  • Amber or red text with a warning — total exceeds 100% (this blocks saving)

When you have multiple collaborators on a track, manually adjusting each split to total exactly 100% can be tedious. The Auto-allocate button solves this.

Click Auto-allocate in the Collaborators panel toolbar. The system divides ownership evenly among all current collaborators:

Before Auto-allocate:
You (Owner): Master 100%, Publishing 100%, Writer 100%
Joshua: Master 50%, Publishing 50%, Writer 50%
Sarah: Master 25%, Publishing 25%, Writer 25%
Total: 175% ⚠️
After Auto-allocate:
You (Owner): Master 33.33%, Publishing 33.33%, Writer 33.33%
Joshua: Master 33.33%, Publishing 33.33%, Writer 33.33%
Sarah: Master 33.34%, Publishing 33.34%, Writer 33.34%
Total: 100% ✓

The system handles odd divisions gracefully. If three collaborators don’t divide evenly, the remainder goes to the last collaborator so the total still equals 100%.

A confirmation message appears before applying the changes. If you change your mind, a toast notification lets you undo the action for a few seconds.

When you add a new collaborator to an existing track, the system suggests a split that keeps your total at or below 100%. This is called smart default splits.

For example, if you have:

You (Owner): Master 100%, Publishing 100%, Writer 100%

And you add Joshua, the system suggests:

You (Owner): Master 50%, Publishing 50%, Writer 50%
Joshua: Master 50%, Publishing 50%, Writer 50%

The suggested split for the new collaborator is calculated based on the remaining allocation after accounting for existing collaborators. You can override this suggestion and enter your own value if needed.

The input field shows a hint indicating how much allocation remains available. If no allocation remains, the hint changes to amber text:

“No allocation remaining — adjust existing splits first”

To prevent accidentally exceeding 100%, the system enforces allocation limits in real time:

  1. Input clamping — when you type a value larger than the remaining allocation, the input automatically caps at the maximum allowed
  2. Live totals — the total percentage updates as you type, with visual warnings when you approach or exceed 100%
  3. Hard blocks — you cannot save changes that would cause total allocation to exceed 100%, even if you somehow bypass the input limits

This protection applies whether you’re adding a new collaborator, editing an existing one, or bulk-updating multiple rows.

To change a collaborator’s splits:

  1. Click the split value you want to edit in the Collaborators panel
  2. Enter the new percentage
  3. The total updates automatically
  4. Click Save to confirm

You can edit master, publishing, and writer splits independently. For example, you might increase a songwriter’s publishing split while keeping their master split unchanged.

Changes take effect immediately and sync across all views — the Collaborators panel, the Overview Widget, and the Tracks grid all reflect the updated values.

To remove a collaborator from a track, click the Remove button next to their name in the Collaborators panel. A confirmation prompt appears, and once confirmed, the collaborator is removed.

Removing a collaborator frees up their split allocation. You can then redistribute that percentage to remaining collaborators or add a different person.

If you need to apply collaborator changes across multiple tracks at once, use the bulk selection feature in the Tracks grid. Select several tracks, then open the Collaborators panel — your changes apply to all selected tracks simultaneously.

This is useful when you bring on a new band member and need to add them as a default collaborator across an entire album’s worth of tracks.

Splits still showing 100% after editing Try refreshing the page. If the issue persists, check that you’re editing the correct track and that your changes saved without errors.

Cannot add collaborator — allocation exceeded Reduce existing collaborators’ splits first, then try again. The warning message tells you how much allocation is available.

Changes not appearing in other views Changes should sync automatically across the Collaborators panel, Overview Widget, and Tracks grid. If you notice a delay, wait a moment for the sync to complete, then refresh if needed.
