Comments on Shared Tracks
When you’re working on a shared track with collaborators, leaving feedback is essential for productive collaboration. Comments let you communicate specific notes, ask questions, and track revision requests — all without leaving the app.
This guide covers everything you need to know about commenting on shared tracks, including who can comment and how comments stay connected to the right files even when things change.
Who Can Comment on Shared Tracks
Section titled “Who Can Comment on Shared Tracks”Anyone with access to a shared track can leave comments. Access comes in two forms:
- Track owner — you created the track, so you have full commenting rights
- Active collaborator — you’ve been invited to the track group and your membership is active (not revoked)
When you’re added as a collaborator, your commenting permissions activate immediately. If you’re later removed from the project, you lose the ability to add new comments, though any comments you already left remain visible to others.
How Comments Stay Connected to Your Files
Section titled “How Comments Stay Connected to Your Files”One of the most useful things about comments in Producer Dashboard is that they don’t break easily. When you leave a comment on a bounce or audio file, the system anchors it using multiple signals — not just a simple filename reference.
This matters because files get renamed, moved, and reorganized during production. A comment tied only to “mix_v3.wav” would disappear the moment you rename the file. Instead, comments use a multi-signal approach:
- Track group ID — the stable anchor that always stays with the project
- Track ID — a direct reference to the specific bounce
- File metadata — including the file’s system identifier and Dropbox file ID
- Original file path — saved at the time the comment was made
The system checks these signals in order of reliability. If the direct track reference is lost (for example, if a track is deleted), the comment falls back to the track group anchor. This means your feedback survives most common workflow changes.
Viewing Comments on Shared Tracks
Section titled “Viewing Comments on Shared Tracks”When you open a shared track in the app, any existing comments appear in the activity panel. You’ll see:
- The comment text and who wrote it
- A timestamp showing when it was posted
- Any linked todos or pinned status
- Timecode markers if the comment was attached to a specific moment
Comments are sorted with the newest first, so recent feedback is always easy to find.
Leaving Comments on Shared Tracks
Section titled “Leaving Comments on Shared Tracks”To add a comment to a shared track:
- Select the track from your project grid
- Open the activity panel (it appears on the right side of the screen)
- Find the comments section and click Add Comment
- Type your feedback in the text field
- Click Post to save your comment
Your comment immediately appears for all collaborators with access to the track. There’s no need to refresh — the comment section updates in real time.
Commenting on Specific Moments
Section titled “Commenting on Specific Moments”If you want to reference a particular part of the track, you can add a timecode to your comment. This is especially helpful when discussing:
- A specific mix adjustment (e.g., “the bass is too loud at 1:23”)
- A vocal timing issue
- A particular instrument that needs attention
- The start and end of a section you want revised
When you attach a timecode, the comment links to that moment in the track’s timeline. Clicking the timecode reference plays the track from that exact point.
Pinned Comments for Important Feedback
Section titled “Pinned Comments for Important Feedback”Track owners and collaborators with master rights can pin important comments. Pinned comments float to the top of the comment list and stay visible regardless of when they were posted.
Use pinning for:
- Major revision requests that need to be addressed
- Approved sections that shouldn’t be changed
- Blocking issues that halt production until resolved
Only collaborators with master split rights on the track group can pin or unpin comments. Regular collaborators can view pinned comments but cannot modify their status.
Editing and Deleting Your Comments
Section titled “Editing and Deleting Your Comments”You can edit or delete any comment you’ve written. To make changes:
- Edit — click the comment menu (three dots) and select Edit, then save your changes
- Delete — click the comment menu and select Delete (this removes the comment permanently)
You cannot edit or delete comments written by others. If you see something that needs correction, you can reply with a new comment addressing the issue.
Comments and the Share Page
Section titled “Comments and the Share Page”When you share a track via a public share link, external viewers can both view and post comments on the share page — unless the share link has comments disabled. This lets clients and collaborators leave feedback directly on the share page without needing a full project account.
To disable comments on a share link, toggle the Disable comments option when creating or editing the share.
